"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. " 1 Peter 2:9
Did you grow up in the church? I didn’t. Oh sure, we went sometimes. More often when I was younger but less and less as I got older. There was no youth group, no kid’s church, just songs and sometimes a message. I can’t say any of it changed my life . . . .
And then one summer when I was 12 I went on a camp and at this camp I saw people being kind to each, working together, serving the kids, interested in me . . . . It was inspiring! I thought I want to know what is so special about these people.
And it turns out it was Jesus! They were all committed to Jesus and to his purpose. It changed my life! They asked me if I wanted to follow Jesus? I thought knowing the maker of the universe was pretty cool and jumped in boots and all.
What attracted me to Jesus in the first place was these people! I thought if they can live a bigger than themselves, caring, loving, amazing life than I can too.
Church isn’t the place. Church is the people! You are God’s special possession and we are called to declare His praises. How do we do that? We declare his praises with our lives.
With words, yes, but also with action. When we live big, caring, beautiful lives that give beyond our immediate families people see Jesus! If those leaders never went on that camp I may never have know Jesus. I am forever grateful for their sacrifice because it set my life in the direction it now is.
How are you declaring his praises? How is your life pointing to Jesus? It’s never too early or late to take stock of our lives and make some changes to point people towards God.
