I spoke to a friend of mine a while back who said if he ever walked into a church he’d have to watch out for the lightning bolts. He was joking of course. But it speaks of a perception that God is angry with us and the moment we walk into a church He’d unleash this anger.
Nothing could be further from the truth. For starters, God is not angry with us. His default posture towards us is love. God is love! His heart is that each of us might come to understand and live in the context of this love.
The love of God is boundless and vast and rich and perfect and deep and endless and best of all it is available for you and for me and for us.
Taking a step into a church building doesn’t anger God, it pleases Him. Not because He is so concerned with church attendance, but because of what this step means for you. Choosing to enter and engage with God’s people is a big step for some of us. Especially those who have been hurt in the past. We know that God celebrates with all of heaven when people make the choice to be found and to enter in to community and family with His people.
Luke 15:10 (CEB)
"In the same way, I tell you, joy breaks out in the presence of God’s angels over one sinner who changes both heart and life."
