After some 25 years of following Jesus and learning how to be like Him as part of His Church, I think maybe I’m starting to get it… I can be a slow learner, but what a journey it has been.
I’ve learnt that God never abandons us or leaves us alone… that doesn’t mean we never have troubles, but that through His Holy Spirit, God is present with us in the midst of them.
I’ve learnt that I’ve been adopted into God’s family as His beloved son… that is truly amazing!
I’ve been terribly frustrated with the Church at times, but I’ve learnt that it’s God’s Church and He wants me in it to learn and grow as part of it. To forgive and be forgiven, to love and be loved, a place to practice sharing the grace He has lavished on me.
As I am learning and slowly growing I have found great joy to be a disciple of Jesus learning to do what He did. I have learnt that Jesus always thinks of others and looks out for the best in everyone. That is why He left glory, lived here on earth as a human being, and died in my place, for my sin.
I believe that eternal life has already begun for me! I also believe that part of my call as a disciple is to be a disciple maker like Jesus.
2000 years ago, Jesus called His first disciples, “…Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him.”
25 years ago, I answered the call to follow Jesus. I joined His Church as a disciple and now I’m a partner with God like those first disciples fishing for people, who will fish for people, who will fish for people. Until He calls me home this is my joy and calling.
