When I was a little child I mostly followed what my parents asked me to do, I generally wanted to please them. This continued into my school years where I followed the teacher’s instructions because I wanted to please the teacher.
Things change as you get older though. Year 6, 7, 8, 9… and lots of questions arise… who am I, and why am I here? Who do I really want to please, who do I really want to follow? Following and pleasing parents and teachers becomes much less important as we get older.
We want to fit in, and we want to be liked. Pleasing our selves becomes much more important and unless our self-focus is challenged in some way, we usually end up following what’s easiest and most popular in the culture around us. What are the cool kids doing? I don’t want to stand out! I’m going to follow them…
But there is another way…
The bible teaches, “…God created us in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female…” (Genesis 1:26-27)
God created us, and He’s interested in relating to us in this journey of life… and even beyond this earthly life if we’re interested?
If you are interested, there is a choice to make… and it has everything to do with who we choose to follow. Proverbs 14:12 says, “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end, it leads to death.” Often the way that appears to be right is that self-focused way – following the cool kids and gathering stuff.
2000 years ago, Jesus arrived here on earth to show us the way to find this life. He said that He was the ‘way’.
Jesus didn’t promise that His ‘way’ was easy or cool… but He did promise that it would lead to eternal life. Jesus called anyone who was willing to come and follow Him…
Would you be willing?
